How Flu Pandemics Spread

Unfortunately for us humans, pandemic influenza would spread in the same way that less harmful influenza infections spread amongst us today, through droplets that come from an infected person.

When someone who has the influenza coughs or sneezes, small droplets that contain the virus are spread through the air. When the infected droplets land on people, or are breathed in by people nearby, then the pandemic influenza is spread.

Humans can also catch influenza by touching the hands of someone with the virus, and even just by touching surfaces or items that infected people have touched. So, you may come in contact with the virus without even knowing that you have done so.

Infected people can also pass on the disease unwittingly, simply because they are infectious before they display any symptoms.

The frequency of Worldwide travel, means that the disease can spread rapidly throughout a large portion of the world.
