How Pandemics Start

If the Avian Influenza virus, or Bird Flu, mutates into a new sub-type strain that humans can catch and pass onto each other, then the virus will be a human influenza virus.

By definition, a pandemic is an "Epidemic over a wide geographic area and affecting a large proportion of the population."

An influenza pandemic occurs when a Type A Influenza virus acquires new proteins. Because the virus that is formed is 'new' to humans, there will not be people who have built up any antibodies to the Influenza virus. This means that the virus can be caught by vast numbers of people, with disastrous results for populations around the world.
